Not long ago, my computer was attacked by a malicious virus. I’d clicked on a link, and suddenly my entire system was in lock-down. At first I panicked, but then I remembered to breathe. At which point I contacted a tech-savvy friend who helped me disable the virus, and I was soon back up and running. Of course, that was nothing compared to what happened this week, when cyber-terrorists paralyzed businesses, hospitals and governments in 150 countries through a devious Ransomware attack.
Welcome to the modern world. In truth, such events mirror how our minds operate. We suddenly get seized by a terrifying thought, which freezes us in panic. Rather than succumbing to disabling fears, though, that’s the crucial moment when we need to take charge. As Terry Cole Whittaker explained in a recent issue of Science of Mind magazine, “Unless you take command of your mind, it will continuously sabotage your desires and efforts like a malicious, hidden program running under all the other programs on a computer.” The way to neutralize such anxious thinking, she says, is to center yourself in the here and now, and quiet your mind. That puts your true self in control – not random, crazy-making thoughts.
In this age of “alternative facts” and rapid change, more than ever before we must turn down the noise and go within. This is especially true right now, since the Sun just skipped into lightning-fast Gemini – sign of mental chatter and multi-tasking – on its way to joining the Moon at the May 25 Gemini New Moon (12:44 p.m. PDT). With both luminaries as well as Mars in bright, busy Gemini, this New Moon is a great time to launch a book (as I’ll be doing) or do something else communication-related. You may be inspired to speak out for a cause you believe in, or otherwise channel the energy in productive ways.
Yet there’s a potential dark side to this New Moon. The Twins have two faces. When disconnected from the heart, as sometimes happens with this mental air sign, the results can be cold and calculating. There’s another strong influence on the 25th, as well: Venus in impatient Aries squares Pluto in strict Capricorn, sparking tempers and ratcheting up pressures, especially in intimate relationships. Mega-mental Gemini, egged on by passionate, controlling Venus-Pluto, can blow things way out of proportion. And, Saturn opposing feisty Mars (exact on the 28th) does his part to fuel frustrations. Whatever is going on in your world, pretend you’re a skilled surgeon and take the time to do things carefully. Beware of overreacting to triggers or trying to forge ahead prematurely. Calm yourself and think things through. Breathe deeply. Give others the benefit of the doubt – as well as plenty of breathing room. And never underestimate the power of a good, relaxing massage!
