The Cone of Power is a tried-and-true method of raising energy and making things happen. No matter how many times I participate in a Cone of Power, the moment of send-off never fails to thrill me. You can really feel the energy taking off! Wiccans (aka witches) of the British Isles have secretly performed this ritual for centuries. According to occultist Gerald Gardner, a coven of witches in southern England launched “Operation Cone of Power” in August 1940 with the intention of preventing the Germans from invading England. Over a hundred Wiccans gathered one night, skyclad (sans clothing) in a remote forest. Their Cone of Power ritual, said Gardner, propelled a message into German leaders’ minds that they would not be able to cross the English Channel. The German army stayed away.
As in 1940, we’re living in a dangerous time with multiple assaults on what we care deeply about. A Cone of Power could be very effective now – especially at an Aquarius Full Moon, with the Sun in fiery, lionhearted Leo opposing the Moon in airy, visionary Aquarius. Plus it’s a lunar eclipse, which opens a gateway of power that peaks at the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse. In Everyday Moon Magic, Dorothy Morrison states that lunar eclipses are by far the most powerful time for doing ritual magic.
At a lunar eclipse, the Earth casts a shadow on the Moon and blocks it from reflecting the Sun’s light. This will occur on Monday, Aug. 7 at 11:11 a.m. PDT, so it’s best to do the ritual the night before when Luna is visible in the sky. All you need are at least three like-minded friends, a private setting, and a shared intention. Just be sure you are not attempting to inflict harm on any person or place, or the Cone of Power could rebound back on you.
As I describe in my book, Moon Power: Lunar Rituals for Connecting with Your Inner Goddess, you should first discuss what shared intention you want to send forth. Let’s say, for example, you want to prevent the brutal killing of dolphins in Taiji, Japan that happens each September through March. Via the Cone of Power, you could send a message to the perpetrators that they would not be able to enter the Taiji cove or slaughter those dolphins. Or, choose another cause that deeply concerns you. And by the way, it’s not necessary to be sky-clad for this ritual! Nor is it essential to do the whole thing outdoors, if you’re concerned about your neighbors. Just proceed as follows:
- After determining your shared intention, go outside and form a circle. Raise your arms and draw down the power of the Full Moon for a few minutes. Imagine it flowing into every cell of your body, until you’re brimming with incandescent light. Then state your intention out loud and ask for Luna’s blessing.
- Go back inside now if you prefer. Join hands for a moment in silence. Then drop them and slowly begin moving your hands in a wide, clockwise circle, synchronizing with each other. Hum softly, increasing in volume as your hands move faster and lift higher. Let the power build slowly and deliberately for five to ten minutes as you keep your intention in mind.
- Once the Cone of Power reaches a peak, fling your hands skyward as you cry out, releasing your intention.
- Thank Luna for blessing your ritual and adjourn to share food and drink.
However you decide to use the upcoming portal of power, I wish you bountiful blessings!
Those words decorated my mind & heart. Thank u.
You are so welcome, Yolanda!
Hi, is it possible to perform this ritual solo?
Hi Verena,
I haven’t heard of it, but I encourage you to try! Let me know how it works…
Looking forward to creating a cone of power with you and the Dragon Sister Cirlce on Sunday!
Feel so blessed to be part of our circle and the timing of this ritual is auspicious indeed!
Thank you so much for writing this! Since my moon is in Aquarius, I’m feeling the power of this full moon as well as this eclipse season. Strong, powerful intentions abound!
I’ll bet you are, Erica! This ritual was tailor-made for you. Happy eclipse!
Hello! My chart says I am a double Aquarian, so I am anxious to absorb the energy of this full moon. I am in the midst of many changes in my life. From here I move forward, leaving the past behind, enjoying the moment, and welcoming the future.
Good for you, Mary! I’m sure that this lunar eclipse will support you!
Thank You for keeping on the Path and for sharing all of your Divine Knowledge and Wisdom! You are a Gem and have always been an Inspiration to me!
Christine you are such a dear! As for staying on the path, it just never worked out for me when I went off it so in a sense I had no choice. But thanks for the acknowledgement since it’s not always easy! Love you…
