OCTOBER
THEME: Justice for All
by Simone Butler
Last
November, we entered the Fifth Night of the Mayan Calendar, a one-year
period that parallels the years encompassing World Wars I and II, and
prior to that, the Dark Ages. I didn't want to inflame fears by raising
the specter of negative potentials, so I stopped giving talks on the
Mayan Calendar. I thought it best to let things unfold as they may,
then re-enter the discourse with the dawn of the illuminating Sixth Day
this November.
Then,
at the September 15 Full Moon conjunct wild card Uranus, came the
unexpected financial meltdown on Wall Street. Some are calling the
president's ensuing demand for $700 billion with no strings attached a
bankers' coup d'etat. Why should we, the taxpayers, bail out the
profit-mad firms who got us into this mess in the first place?
Good
question. Now that the Sun is in Libra, issues of fairness and
inequity are coming into sharp focus. Libra, the sign of the
balancing scales, demands justice and well-being for all.
Mayan
Calendar scholar Ian Lungold
forecast an economic meltdown for the Fifth Night. He said that this
was necessary to knock the old, shaky financial structure out from
under us and clear the way for something more sustainable. He suggested
we take our resources out of anything illusory--such as the stock
market--and invest in green technologies that would bring us back into
balance with the Earth.
Interestingly,
in the wake of the recent crisis, the House Select Committee on Energy
Independence hosted a Congressional hearing called "The Green Road to
Economic Recovery." Its centerpiece was a Green Recovery report which
found that "the transformation to a low-carbon economy would result in
sustainable economic growth." The high profile of green jobs in Barack
Obama's new energy platform has helped raised awareness of this report.
This positive
development is a reflection of the Jupiter/Saturn trine in earth
signs during Sept.-Oct. This trine tells us that we needn't give
in to fear-mongering or survival panic and continue to support an
economic system fed by greed. Instead, we must re-establish a
strong sense of community and begin to live more in alignment with
the Earth. The death of the old structure and simultaneous birth
of a new paradigm will intensify over the next few years. Lungold
said it's critical during this accelerated evolution of consciousness
to stay centered in the eye of the hurricane and trust our intuition
to guide us. Get grounded however you can--walk barefoot on the
Earth, exchange massages with those you love, take a few heaping
spoonfuls of powdered spirolina in juice each day (works for me!)
And, know that your security comes from within--not from the status
of your financial portfolio.
As
evolution accelerates, the feminine side of our brain is coming into
balance with the masculine. The Sept. 29 New Moon in Libra is a
perfect time to align with this process, as it falls on the heels
of the Autumnal Equinox ,when light and dark (masculine and feminine)
are equal. This New Moon highlights love, peace and justice. Take a
look at your primary relationships and determine what may be out of
balance. Are you giving too much or getting too little? It's also
crucial to examine the most important relationship of all--the one with
yourself. Are you paying attention to your body's needs (the feminine)
or primarily focused on the mental aspect of life (the masculine)?
The
theme of finding balance in relationships is amplified by mental
Mercury's backward trek through Libra from Sept. 24 through Oct. 15.
During this time, old patterns of co-dependence may reoccur, making us
extra sensitive to what seems like unfair behavior. On the world stage,
Mercury's machinations could make for an interesting back-and-forth
experience with the financial bailout as well as the presidential
debates. But the Jupiter/Saturn trine should help maintain a semblance
of the status quo--at least until the Dec. 12 Full Moon square
Uranus, which is likely to re-enact the unpredictable energies of Sept.
15.
Meanwhile,
at the upcoming Libra New Moon on Monday, Sept. 29 (exact at 1:12 am
Pacific time), let's take a close look at ourselves, our primary
relationships and our relationship with the world at large. Then, work
on rebalancing whatever may be out of sync. Meditate on bringing the
left and right hemispheres of your brain into balance, and enjoy the
ensuing bliss. In Nov. we'll enter the Sixth Day, a one-year period of
flowering consciousness that promises to take this process to the next
level. More on that next time!
