There aren’t many goddesses who embody the warrior spirit of Mars – but I experienced one last week at Volcano National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. When the Polynesian people migrated to Hawaii a thousand years ago, they brought with them the legend of an all-powerful goddess with a fiery temper. Although her apparition has been seen throughout the world in volcanic eruptions, Pele-honua-mea is said to live at the summit of Kilauea. The flame of Madame Pele burns eternally in a crater atop one of the most active volcanoes in the world (beautifully depicted in the portrait above, by Herb Kawainui Kane).

We drove the windy road to Kilauea on an overcast, drizzly day – which accentuated the stark grey beauty of the volcanic landscape and its lush green foliage. Overlooking the volcano in the distance, we could see a plume of steam arising from the crater – potent proof of the molten lava within. When my friend went on ahead to the museum, I lingered for a moment to ask Pele to bless me with some of her fiery spirit.

I’d forgotten all about the prayer until a few days later, when I was falsely accused of creating a problem. After trying and failing to defend myself, I seethed in silence for a few minutes. Then I felt an unfamiliar yet undeniable power rise within – erupting in a strong declaration of my feelings.  Suddenly, I commanded respect. Pele had spoken through me.

Mars closely conjoins the upcoming Gemini New Moon (Tuesday June 16, 7:05 a.m. PDT). The warrior god-goddess seeks an outlet now through Gemini channels – like the power of words. Although anger can be destructive, it is also a potent tool. As long as it isn’t expressed in destructive ways, anger is an important way to know ourselves – and for others to know us.

Now that Mercury is out of retrograde, we can harness the energetic fire of Pele to refresh our spirits and forge ahead. Be aware, however, that even though the New Moon is Tuesday morning, the Moon goes void soon after. So make Monday the 15th your power day – and be sure to jot down any brilliant ideas that come your way between now and then. Ask Pele to light your inner spark – and watch the magic unfold!

If you need help speaking your truth, check out this Gemini New Moon ritual from my book, Astro Feng Shui: Making Magic in Your Home and Life. And be sure to light a blue candle in your Knowledge gua (to the left of the front door as you enter) the night before the New Moon and speak your intentions for the month ahead.
